We had one varsity runner for this meet and all our other boys ran in the JV race as a way to get ourselves back on course and since this race would feature a very deep field of primarily Division 1 schools. On a perfect day for racing (partly cloudy, mid-50s), our boys ran pretty well with 4 of the 7 that ran running lifetime personal bests and 2 others running season bests. Junior August Gresens (24th/17:42) struggled a bit in the latter stages of the race, but knows what he must do to contend for the conference title and an individual spot for the state meet. On the girls side, we had a strange day in that the varsity race was a bit off for us, but the JV girls finished the day with several very strong performances. We were again led by freshman Mya Hemling (35th/21:28), who battled through a day when she was not feeling 100%. Sophomore Jada Gresens (53rd/22:25) ran a very evenly paced race on her way to a season-best time. Our pack from 3-6 were all within 27 seconds of each other as has been the norm this season, but struggled a bit in the second half of the race as well.

09-29-18  09:00 AM  Invitational     Burlington Area School District     Away      -     Girls Varsity: 1st/4 JV Girls: 1st/1 Boys Varsity: Incomplete Boys JV: Incomplete Link to complete results: http://www.pttiming.com/events/87931045 This meet was much smaller than it has been in recent years and at a new venue, our girls seized the opportunity and ran very well as a group in both races. On the varsity side, 3 girls placed in the top-10 and our 5 scoring runners were all in the top-12. We were led by freshman Mya Hemling (1st/21:12) who became the first LLHS runner to win an individual title for a very long time (I will need to dig further into the archives to find an exact time when that happened). She was followed by sophomore Jada Gresens (3rd/22:26) and junior Kristin Karas (7th/23:12) who despite enduring a bad stitch during the second mile, was able to rebound and pass two runners in the final mile en route to a new personal best. On the boys' side, we took some steps forward and some steps backward. Two runners that had broken 20:00 last week at Naga-Waukee Park were back over 20:00 in Burlington as they continue to get used to varsity-level racing. Three of the four JV runners ran season bests as we continue to see imrprovement throughout the roster. We were led by junior August Gresens (2nd/17:48), who was in 9th at the mile, but patiently worked his way through the ranks and closed the door on three pursuers that all finished within 7 seconds of August.

10-04-18  04:00 PM  Invitational     Fort Atkinson     Away      -     The results for Lakeside at the Koshkonong Klassic at Fort Atkinson are as follows: Girls: 4th/4 Boys: 4th/4 It was very much a struggle in the team races where our lack of depth or presence up front was exposed by very good competition. Despite the poor team standings, we had several individual races that stood out. On the girls' side, we were led up front by freshman Mya Hemling (3rd/21:38) who was struggling through some aches and pains during the race and ran courageously. Junior Kristin Karas (17th/22:56) set a new personal best as our third runner as she continues to work her way up the ranks. Our pack was broken up a bit today, which had the team scores balloon in a hurry. On the boys' side, inexperience of varsity-level running is again a central theme. We were led today by junior August Gresens (6th/18:03), who stuggled in the middle mile of the race, but still was able to muster a good final mile. Sophomore Micah Nasett (27th/20:11) was our second finisher with a fine race where he ran a strong second half. We will next compete at the Capitol Conference championships in New Glarus on Saturday, October 13.

10-13-18  10:00 AM  Conference Meet     New Glarus     Away      -     Boys Varsity: 4th/5 (Columbus was incomplete) Boys JV: Incomplete Girls Varsity 5th/6 Girls JV: 2nd/5 Complete results are attached. Not the team standings that we were looking for on either side. The course was at New Glarus High School, which was a change from its original plan due to the excessive rains of late. With the heavy footing, the times were slow all around. On the girls' side, Lake Mills showed what I believe was their best team race of the year and won by a decisive margin in the Capitol North (30 points). We had one girl finish on the all-conference team. Freshman Mya Hemling (11th/22:25) took home second team honors with her race where she battled a rare off-day, but moved well in the final mile. On the boys' side, Luther Prep easily outdistanced everyone in a dominant performance. With all five of their scoring runners finishing in the top 8, no other team was a real threat. Our boys were led by junior August Gresens (2nd/18:23), who struggled in the middle stages of the race, but rebounded well in the last mile en route to first-team all conference honors for the second year in a row. We will next be in action at the WIAA Division 2 Sectional at Whitewater on Friday, October 19.

10-19-18  04:00 PM  Sectionals     Whitewater     Away      -     Here are the results for the WIAA Division 2 Sectional hosted by Whitewater High School. Boys: 8th/13 Girls: 6th/11 Links to complete results: Boys: http://hss.eclipseracetiming.com/xclive/boys.htm Girls: http://hss.eclipseracetiming.com/xclive/girls.htm On a windswept day, the course at UW-Whitewater ran a little faster than I thought it would. The footing was great and the weather was perfect cross country weather - mid-50s, cloudy, and windy. We had a bittersweet day today in that in the team standings, we had a better showing than what we have been running over the last two meets. The boys' race was one I will remember for a long time. In the front of the pack, junior August Gresens (12th/17:51) was in contention for a qualifier spot and put himself in great position early. He was closing well in the final mile after dropping back a bit in the middle mile and had a strong finish, but finished a mere 2.2 seconds outside of the final qualifying spot. I could not be more proud of the effort August has put in this season. He had the vision early in the summer to run well at this meet to get a shot to qualify and nearly did. While he was disappointed, this will be motivation to continue the hard work that has served him so well. After August, the boys ran their best race on the varsity side of the entire season. Junior Ben Ertman (48th/19:43) ran his best race of the season and stayed aggressive until the end of the race. In the team race, East Troy proved they are one of the favorites for a team trophy with a dominant performance in which their top to runners finished 1-2 overall and their top-5 were all in the top 17 finishers. Henry Chapman won the individual title in 17:05. Jefferson was the second team qualifier with a strong demonstration of pack running in the front. On the girls' side, we had a difficult day up front, but ran very well from #2 - #5 to close out the scoring quickly once again. We were led again by freshman Mya Hemling (26th/22:20), who took some risks and went out very aggressively, but struggled in the second half of the race. The future is very bright for Mya, who has shown her talent in what was a fine freshman season. Right behind Mya came sophomore Jada Gresens (27th/22:25), who ran her best race of the season and closed very well in the final mile. Our pack then followed with junior Kristin Karas (35th/23:16), sophomore Haylee Meske (36th/23:17) and junior Maddie Abel (48th/23:46) completing the scoring for the day. We were missing junior Abbie DiGiovanni, who was not able to compete due to illness, but the girls filled in the spot admirably. In the team race, Jefferson dominated up front with their top 2 runners going 1-2 in convincing fashion. Mariah Linse won by a whopping margin of 35 seconds. Lake Mills ran another outstanding team race to punch their second straight ticket to the state meet. They narrowly edged out East Troy by two points to claim their spot. Thanks for all your efforts in coverage this season. It has been a fun season for us and I look forward to continuing to build toward even greater future success with this team.
